How to use geography past papers properly

Geography rewards skills and well-learnt case studies. These habits make past papers count.

  1. Practise the skills questionsGrid references, scale, graphs and data calculations appear on every paper. They're quick marks once practised.
  2. Learn your case studies in detailExaminers reward named places, facts and figures. Make a one page summary for each case study and use it in practice answers.
  3. Plan the long answersFor 9 mark and similar questions, plan a balanced argument and finish with a clear judgement.
  4. Use the inserts properlyQuote figures and features from the insert in your answers. Many marks need evidence from the resources.
  5. Revise your fieldworkEvery GCSE board asks about fieldwork. Know your aims, methods, data and conclusions for both of your enquiries.
  6. Read the examiner reportsReports explain exactly where answers lost marks. They're linked from each board's page above.

Geography past papers: common questions

Are these past papers free?

Yes. Every paper linked from this page is free and opens from the exam board's own website. Some boards hold back the most recent papers for a year so schools can use them as mocks.

Do I need the insert?

Yes. Geography papers refer to maps, photos and data in a separate insert or resource booklet. Download it with the paper so you can answer every question.

Are there tiers in GCSE Geography?

No. Everyone sits the same papers, with grades 9 to 1 available.

Can I use papers from a different Geography course?

Skills questions are similar across boards, so other papers are useful extra practice. For topic and case study questions, stick to your own board and course.

Where can I find more geography resources?

Our sister site, World of Teaching, has free geography PowerPoints written by teachers.
