How to use maths past papers properly

Maths is the subject where past papers help most, because the same question types come back year after year. This routine works for every board.

  1. Practise on your own tierFoundation and Higher papers share some questions, but Higher students need the harder material and Foundation students need confidence on the core topics.
  2. Always show your workingMethod marks make up a large share of every paper. A wrong final answer with clear working can still earn most of the marks.
  3. Do non-calculator papers regularlyFractions, percentages and long multiplication without a calculator take practice. Keep doing non-calculator papers right up to the exam.
  4. Mark strictly and find the patternAfter each paper, list the topics you lost marks on. The same weak topics usually show up again, and that list is your revision plan.
  5. Learn the formulae you needCheck what your board gives you on a formulae sheet and learn the rest, such as the area of a circle or the quadratic formula, so they're automatic.
  6. Finish with timed papersIn the final weeks, sit complete papers in 1 hour 30 minutes with no notes, and leave time at the end to check your answers.

Maths past papers: common questions

Are these past papers free?

Yes. Every paper linked from this page is free and opens from the exam board's own website. Some boards hold back the most recent papers for a year so schools can use them as mocks.

Should I use Foundation or Higher papers?

Use the tier you've been entered for. Higher students can warm up with the last few questions of Foundation papers, which overlap with the start of Higher papers.

Can I use papers from another board?

Yes. GCSE Maths content is the same across the English boards, so AQA, Edexcel and OCR papers are all good practice whichever board you're with. The layout and paper numbers differ, though.

What are the November papers?

November exams are mainly for students resitting GCSE Maths. The papers follow the same format as June, so they're excellent extra practice.

Where can I find more maths resources?

Our sister site, World of Teaching, has free maths PowerPoints written by teachers.
